Back Bending Postures

Back Bending Postures

Backbends require much courage as they open our hearts. The collarbones move away from each other drawing the shoulders back & the shoulder blades move down the back & into the body to scoop the chest forward & up. The legs extend, contracting the hamstrings & lengthening the quads without restricting the sacrum. Backbending postures are energising, they lift our spirits & counteract the hours we spend hunched over our desks!!

Ustrasana

Ustrasana

Classified as a 'baby backbend' or a beginners pose, Ustrasana requires courage & strong legs! I need to keep awareness in the contact of the front of my feet spreading on the floor, my thighs need to lengthen & rotate slightly inward to offer my spine stability so that it has the freedom to lengthen & bend back. My heart lifts & opens as the neck lengthens to release my head back.
